Google Responsive Web Design Algorithm changes: What you Need to Know

Google Responsive Web Design Algorithm changes: What you Need to Know

For a while now there’s been a lot of speculation as to whether Google would be releasing a new algorithm and now we’ve heard it straight from the horse’s mouth! Yes, Google will be launching a new mobile search algorithm on 21st April 2015, which aims to elevate the rankings of responsive websites.

If you’ve a keen eye for SEO, you’ve probably seen this coming for a long while. All the signs have been there, from Google’s ‘mobile-friendly’ labels which it began using late last year, to the new tool it launched, designed to help webmasters assess how mobile friendly their sites are. With more and more people using their smartphones to surf the web, it only seemed sensible that Google found a way to promote sites that offer the ultimate mobile experience.

What does this mean for businesses?

It is essentially means that if you haven’t already invested in a responsive web design, then now’s the time to do it. Well that’s if you want to actually benefit from increased rankings in mobile searches. Whilst you won’t be penalised for not having a responsive website, you could easily lose customers to competitors offering a better mobile user experience and you certainly don’t want to do that!

By using a responsive web design, you’ll not only see an increase in rankings but also traffic levels and conversions. By offering customers a better mobile experience, you stand a much greater chance of them buying your products and returning to use your site again in the future. It’s a win-win situation for both parties.

How does the new Google algorithm work?

The new mobile search algorithm has been designed to assess sites in real time. This means that as soon as Google crawls your site and sees it is mobile friendly, it’ll start receiving ranking benefits. The higher you crawl up the search engine results page, the more traffic you’ll receive to your site.

Just to clarify, you don’t have to make your site mobile friendly by 21st April, it’s not a final deadline but it’s worth investing in a responsive web design ASAP so you can start benefitting from improved mobile search rankings.

It’s also worth keeping in mind that the Google algorithm will be assessing websites on a page-by-page basis. So if only a couple of your pages are mobile friendly, they will be the only pages to see an increase in mobile search rankings. The rest of the pages will not receive the same benefi

Responsive web design is the way forward

With just a month until the new algorithm is released, there’s no better time to invest in a responsive web design. Not only will it help you to achieve better search rankings but also drive down your costs and future proof your website against new device launches. Responsive web design is the future and if you want your customers to see you as a forward thinking company, you’ll need one to prove it to them.
