Features I often incorporate into WordPress theme development.
WordPress theme development projects follow the below process.
WordPress development will start once the web design files have been completed unless it is a development only project. I create a list of all the required WordPress plugins and choose the WordPress theme that will be customised to suit the design.
A staging server environment is created with the hosting provider WP Engine. The WordPress theme and plugins are installed and existing web pages and images are imported from an existing website if required. A link is sent to my client to view the website development progress and to allow discussion and feedback.
The WordPress theme, plugins and page builder and developed, configured and styled to suit the design. The website is developed to work responsively on mobile, tablet and desktop computers by reordering, resizing and hiding columns, images and text.
The WordPress website is populated with content including text and resized images, video content and illustrations. My client can add their own content if required. Content can also be imported from provided content in CSV format.
The website will be optimised to a basic level for SEO including meta titles and meta descriptions. Content can be adjusted if needed to fit the design and the website is optimised for speed by compressing images and removing unneeded code. There are a wide range of optimisation options which are offered in addition to this basic setup.
The WordPress website is passed over for client review and feedback where final amendments to the content can be made. Additional development and design requirements are often recognised during the development process. These can be quoted on and added at this stage if required.
Below is a list of WordPress plugins Barry often installs into a clients’ website.
Optimising your website for search engines and digital marketing integrations are key factors in the WordPress development stages.
Barry ensures the correct implementation of meta title, meta descriptions, image ALT and title tags, structured data, optimised URL’s and image file names and many other technical factors to enhance your website’s SEO.
He installs Google tag manager which can then be setup to connect with Google analytics, Facebook, Google ads and tracks events on your website for reporting on pay-per-click, SEO and social media campaigns.
Security is of utmost importance to our clients so Barry ensures WordPress installations are secured on multiple levels. He uses enterprise-level hosting from WP Engine which has many security features inbuilt and in addition to this, he installs several plugins to enhance security further.
Spam from comments and contact forms are filtered out, quarantined and automatically deleted using Akismet, a leading anti-spam WordPress plugins.
As a website becomes larger with more pages, text, images and code, the website slows down due to the increased number of files and file size that needs to be downloaded to the website visitor’s browser.
Slower websites are held back in the back in the search engine rankings which reduces visitor numbers and effects the user experience which results in fewer sales leads and product sales from the website.
Barry’s speed optimisation service focuses on clean and combined files, optimised WordPress themes, image file size reduction and faster delivery, secure hosting with optimised caching along with many other tweaks to get the most out of your website.

Commonly asked questions and answers about London WordPress developers
The cost of hiring a WordPress web developer will depend if you hire a Freelance developer directly, through a recruitment agency or as part of a project through a design agency.
A design agency will usually be the most expensive and the project size would need to be big enough for the project to be worthwhile taking on. They would typically charge at least 50% or more than hiring a Freelance WordPress developer directly, however, they should be an experienced web developer, although for small agencies this isn’t always the case.
Recruitment agencies also can provide a WordPress developer who should have been vetted if they are a reputable recruitment agency. This can be useful as the WordPress developer may only be required for a few days of work a month and will often work in the client’s office location. The prices can vary significantly but the recruitment agency will add a percentage to the cost of the WordPress developers fees and also charge VAT.
Freelance WordPress developers should be the cheaper of the 3, however finding an experienced developer can require a lot of work and potential disappointment as there is no vetting process.
I have worked as a Freelance WordPress developer for over 10 years and use to own a digital agency hiring WordPress developers for my client’s larger projects as well as using WordPress developers from recruitments agencies.
I find the best approach is to talk to the web developer on the phone and ask them about previous projects before starting on a small piece of work.
From there you can build a relationship with that WordPress developer if they suit your needs and working style and try and use that developer for future projects.
