Process

WordPress theme development projects follow the below process

STAGE 1

Development Planning

WordPress development will start once the web design files have been completed unless it is a development only project. I create a list of all the required WordPress plugins and choose the WordPress theme that will be customised to suit the design.

STAGE 1
STAGE 2

Hosting Setup

A staging server environment is created with the hosting provider WP Engine.  The WordPress theme and plugins are installed and existing web pages and images are imported from an existing website if required. A link is sent to my client to view the website development progress and to allow discussion and feedback.

STAGE 2
STAGE 3

WordPress Development

The WordPress theme, plugins and page builder and developed, configured and styled to suit the design. The website is developed to work responsively on mobile, tablet and desktop computers by reordering, resizing and hiding columns, images and text.
STAGE 3
STAGE 4

Content Population

The WordPress website is populated with content including text and resized images, video content and illustrations. My client can add their own content if required. Content can also be imported from provided content in CSV format.

STAGE 4
STAGE 5

SEO, Content & Speed Optimisation

The website will be optimised to a basic level for SEO including meta titles and meta descriptions. Content can be adjusted if needed to fit the design and the website is optimised for speed by compressing images and removing unneeded code. There are a wide range of optimisation options which are offered in addition to this basic setup.

STAGE 5
STAGE 6

Client Review

The WordPress website is passed over for client review and feedback where final amendments to the content can be made. Additional development and design requirements are often recognised during the development process. These can be quoted on and added at this stage if required.

STAGE 6
STAGE 7

Website Testing & Launch

The final WordPress website is tested for cross browser compatibility, speed performance, technical SEO and security. Once these test have been completed and approved by my client, the website is deployed to the clients production server with WP Engine or the hosting provider of their choice.

STAGE 7

WordPress Plugins

WordPress plugins I often install into a clients’ website

Image Compression

Image size is usually the main reason for a slow website. We configure lossless image compression plugins as part of our website speed optimisation.

Map Plugins

Store locations, directions to your office or hiking routes can be added to a map and used as an interactive tool for your website visitors increasing user engagement.

SEO Plugins

Optimising your website for search engines is essential to effectively market your website so we configure SEO plugins to maximise your search rankings.

Review Plugins

Reviews of your products or services taken from Google or similar trusted websites can be displayed in a carousel with integrated microdata for SEO.

E-commerce

The WooCommerce plugin converts your website into a sophisticated e-commerce platform to enable visitors to buy directly from your website.

Hero Slider

Sliders are used to introduce a page with one of several images sliding across to show your visitors the range of services, features and benefits your company can provide.

Pricing Table

Allow your website visitors to see the packages you offer with your services, the price and value you offer along with a call to action button.

Contact Forms

Contact forms with set field are essential to gain sales leads from your website by giving visitors the opportunity to easily contact you with relevant details.

Hosting & Support

Secure & fast hosting with daily backups

Web Hosting

Hosting

Security is of utmost importance to our clients so I ensure WordPress installations are secured on multiple levels. I use enterprise-level hosting from WP Engine which has several security features inbuilt along with plugins to enhance security further.

Spam from comments and contact forms are filtered out, quarantined and automatically deleted using Akismet, a leading anti-spam WordPress plugins.

Performance

Performance

As a website becomes larger with more pages, text, images and code, the website slows down due to the increased number of files and file size that needs to be downloaded to the website visitor’s browser.

Slower websites are held back in the back in the search engine rankings which reduces visitor numbers and effects the user experience which results in fewer sales leads and product sales from the website.

Barry’s speed optimisation service focuses on clean and combined files, optimised WordPress themes, image file size reduction and faster delivery, secure hosting with optimised caching along with many other tweaks to get the most out of your website.

WordPress SEO

WordPress SEO

Optimising your website for search engines and digital marketing integrations are key factors in the WordPress development stages.

Barry ensures the correct implementation of meta title, meta descriptions, image ALT and title tags, structured data, optimised URL’s and image file names and many other technical factors to enhance your website’s SEO.

He installs Google tag manager which can then be setup to connect with Google analytics, Facebook, Google ads and tracks events on your website for reporting on pay-per-click, SEO and social media campaigns.

Frequently Asked Questions

Commonly asked questions and answers about London WordPress developers

The cost of hiring a WordPress web developer will depend if you hire a Freelance developer directly, through a recruitment agency or as part of a project through a design agency.

A design agency will usually be the most expensive and the project size would need to be big enough for the project to be worthwhile taking on. They would typically charge at least 50% or more than hiring a Freelance WordPress developer directly, however, they should be an experienced web developer, although for small agencies this isn't always the case.

Recruitment agencies also can provide a WordPress developer who should have been vetted if they are a reputable recruitment agency. This can be useful as the WordPress developer may only be required for a few days of work a month and will often work in the client's office location. The prices can vary significantly but the recruitment agency will add a percentage to the cost of the WordPress developers fees and also charge VAT.

Freelance WordPress developers should be the cheaper of the 3, however finding an experienced developer can require a lot of work and potential disappointment as there is no vetting process.

I have worked as a Freelance WordPress developer for over 10 years and use to own a digital agency hiring WordPress developers for my client's larger projects as well as using WordPress developers from recruitments agencies.

I find the best approach is to talk to the web developer on the phone and ask them about previous projects before starting on a small piece of work.

From there you can build a relationship with that WordPress developer if they suit your needs and working style and try and use that developer for future projects.

It's best to view the web designer's website portfolio to gauge if their web design style matches your vision for your website. From there you can contact them via email or phone with an outline of your web design and development project.

During the Coronavirus pandemic, web developers in London will work from home but usually they will work from a co-working space in London such as WeWork or similar.

Coworking spaces in London have rapidly grown over the past 8 years and has now become the norm for web developers to rent work space in Shoreditch or central London.

I personally work on web development projects at my house but usually I work from central London.

I design and develop all websites with SEO in mind. This starts with the structure of your website by creating pages to target search terms on Google for people looking for your services.

For example, web design London is a term often used for people looking for a London web design agency. By creating content that targets this keyword along with associated terms, your website will start to rank for that particular term.

There are many other factors including reviews, FAQs, images related to your search terms, microdata, keywords in your URL, etc, which are all taken into consideration during the web design phase.
